Understanding Your Health Coverage Options

Health insurance is one of the most complex categories of insurance — and one of the most important. The right plan depends on your age, income, employment status, family size, and health situation. As an independent agency, we're not tied to a single carrier, which means we can help you compare options across the market and find what actually fits your life — not just what's easiest to sell.

We work with clients across two main health insurance paths — and help you determine which one actually makes sense for your income, situation, and budget:

ACA Marketplace Plans

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) created health insurance marketplaces where individuals and families can purchase coverage. Key things to know:

  • Open enrollment is November 1 – January 15 each year
  • Qualifying life events (job loss, marriage, new baby) allow special enrollment
  • Premium tax credits are available if your income falls within ACA guidelines
  • Plans are categorized as Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum based on cost-sharing
  • Pre-existing conditions cannot be used to deny coverage or increase your premium

Private Health Insurance

Private health insurance is purchased directly from an insurance carrier — outside the government marketplace. It's a strong option for individuals who don't qualify for ACA subsidies, want more flexibility, or are between jobs and need temporary coverage:

  • Available year-round — no open enrollment window required
  • Short-term plans can cover gaps of 30 days to 12 months
  • Fixed indemnity plans pay a set benefit per medical event regardless of other coverage
  • Often lower premiums than ACA plans if you earn too much for subsidies
  • Supplemental plans (like Aflac) layer on top of any existing coverage to cover out-of-pocket costs
  • Good fit for self-employed individuals, part-time workers, or early retirees not yet on Medicare
Not sure which path you're on? Tell us your age and situation and we'll point you in the right direction — whether that's ACA, Medicare, short-term coverage, or group alternatives.

Why Use an Independent Agent?

You can enroll in ACA or Medicare directly — but an independent agent costs you nothing extra (carriers pay us directly) and can save you significant money and frustration. Here's what we do that the government marketplace doesn't:

We compare plans side-by-side across both ACA marketplace and private carriers, factoring in your doctors, prescriptions, and projected usage — not just the headline premium. We also make sure you're claiming every subsidy or tax credit you're eligible for, which many people miss when enrolling alone.

For individuals who earn too much for ACA subsidies or need coverage outside open enrollment, private plans are often the smarter move — and we know which carriers offer the best value for your specific situation. We do the comparison work so you don't have to.
