How an IUL Works

An Indexed Universal Life (IUL) policy is a type of permanent life insurance that does two things at once: it provides a lifelong death benefit for your loved ones, and it builds a cash value account that grows over time. The unique feature of an IUL is how that cash value grows — it's tied to the performance of a stock market index (like the S&P 500), but you're never directly invested in the market.

Here's the key distinction: when the index goes up, your cash value earns a portion of that gain, up to a cap (typically 10–13%). When the market drops, your cash value earns zero — not negative. You can never lose money due to market performance. This "floor and cap" structure is what makes IUL a powerful tool for accumulating tax-free wealth while keeping your family protected.

Layer 1

Lifelong Death Benefit

Your policy stays in force as long as premiums are paid — no expiration date. Your beneficiaries are always protected, for life.

Layer 2

Cash Value Growth

A portion of every premium goes into a cash value account. That account earns interest based on index performance — with a floor of 0% (you never lose).

Layer 3

Tax-Free Access

Once enough cash value builds up, you can borrow against it tax-free. Many clients use this for retirement income, college funding, or emergencies.

Layer 4

Flexibility

Unlike term, you can adjust premiums and death benefit as your life changes. IUL is designed to grow with you over decades.

Important: IUL policies require consistent funding to perform well. They work best when treated as a long-term strategy — not a short-term investment. We'll walk you through an illustration before you commit to anything.

Who Benefits Most from an IUL?

IUL isn't for everyone — but for the right client, it's one of the most powerful financial tools available.

High Earners

Maxed out your 401(k) and Roth IRA? An IUL offers another bucket of tax-free growth with no IRS contribution limits.

Business Owners

Fund key person coverage, executive benefits, or deferred comp plans — all within one flexible policy.

Parents Planning Ahead

Start a policy early, let cash value grow for 18–20 years, and use it tax-free for college costs or to fund your child's future.

Pre-Retirees

Supplement Social Security and retirement accounts with tax-free IUL distributions that don't affect Medicare thresholds.

Carriers We Work With

IUL policy design varies significantly between carriers. We compare cap rates, participation rates, and illustration assumptions so you get a policy built to actually perform.
